Exhibitions and records of works of art

Prince Albert recognised the importance of photography to record and document notable exhibitions and works of art

ROBERT JEFFERSON BINGHAM (1825-70)

Oeuvre de Paul Delaroche / reproduit en photographie par Bingham ; accompagné d'une notice sur la vie ... par Henri Delaborde ; et du catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre par Jules Goddé

1858

Leather and cloth bound photograph album with albumen prints | 58.2 x 42.5 x 6.6 cm (whole object) | RCIN 1133530

Album containing 86 photographs (RCINs 2160746-2160831) of works by or after Paul Delaroche (1797-1856), apart from the second item (RCIN 2160747). This was the first time the work of a painter had been presented in any substantial form through photography. Robert Bingham's commercially available album was followed by another succesful monograph on Ary Scheffer, published by the same house two years later (RCIN 2865009).

In the 1860s, there was considerable anxiety over the deterioration of modern paintings and photography was seen as a way to preserve the appearance of these objects. See S. Bann, ed. 'Art and the Early Photographic Album' (Washington, 2011), pp.21-24.

According to a reference in the Royal Archives (RA Addl. MSS U 32, p. 2.) the volume was given as a gift from Queen Victoria to Prince Albert at Christmas 1858.
