AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'Mignon aspirant au Ciel'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865032

Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was created in 1839. The Dordrechts Museum in The Netherlands has a later version in its collection (DM/S/86). Inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1795-6 novel 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship', the image depicts Mignon, the novel's heroine, in long dress leaning against a parapet. Her hands, clasped in prayer, are held up touching her right cheek. She gazes upwards to the left.

Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
