AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'Mignon et son Père'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865039

Photograph of a painting created by Ary Scheffer around 1838. Inspired by Goethe's novel 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship', the work depicts Mignon, the novel's heroine, barefoot in blouse and skirt, wearing her hair down. She looks down upon her father, who appears in cloak, kneeling with his arm resting on a harp.

Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
