AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'Mater dolorosa'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865041

Photograph of a work Ary Scheffer, created around 1845. The work depicts a half-size portrait of the Virgin, facing the viewer and turning her head to gaze upwards to the left. She raises her hands slightly over her shoulders.

Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
