AFTER ARY SCHEFFER (1795-1858)

'Les Plaints de la Jeune Fille'

1860

Albumen print? | RCIN 2865050

Photograph of an unidentified work probably by Ary Scheffer depicting a full-length portrait of two female figures gazing each other. The left figure is kneeling in the foreground, her arms lifted in supplication. The right figure appears elevated, genuflecting on a cloud in the background. She rests her left hand on her left knee, while her right arm is raised in blessing.

Ary Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
