AFTER HIPPOLYTE PAUL DELAROCHE (1797-1856)
'L'ensevelissement du Christ'
1857-58Albumen print? | RCIN 2160811
Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche, created around 1852. The work depicts a scene following the Deposition of the Christ and preceding his Entombment. The body of the Christ is presented in the supine position along the image's bottom edge, lying on a rectangular piece of linen on the ground. Three kneeling men, who surround his body, are partly lifting the cloth; one supports Christ's head, another holds up the cloth's upper right corner, and a third raises the cloth's lowest part. A group of female figures are kneeling in the background, to the left.
