'Le Giaour'
1860Albumen print? | RCIN 2865026
Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, a 1832 version of which is now in the collection of the Musée de la Vie romantique, Paris (Inv. no. 2004.8). Inspired by Lord Byron's (1788-1824) poem The Giaour, the image depicts a three-quarter length portrait of the protagonist in a hooded cloak. His right hand is placed on his waist, while his left hand rests on his head in a fist.
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
