Photograph of a half-length portrait of James III, King of Scotland (1452-88). The king poses facing three-quarters to the left and gazing ahead, away from the viewer. He holds a small scroll in his right hand and places it in front of his stomach. A long gold chain is twice wound around his neck, with a pendant badge showing St Andrew holding a cross.

At the time of the photograph, the painting was in the collection of Admiral Bethune of Balfour, Fifeshire (1802-84).
