'Herodiade'
1857-58Albumen print? | RCIN 2160782
Photograph of a painting by Paul Delaroche in 1843 and now in the collection of the Wallraf–Richartz Museum, Cologne (Inv. no. WRM 1093). The painting depicts a three-quarter length portrait of Herodias, Princess of Judaea, standing and facing to the left, her head turned to the right. She rests her hands on a cabinet upon which lies a platter containing the head of Saint John the Baptist. According to the biblical event, his decapitation was ordered by Herod Antipas following the request of his step-daughter Salome, who appears lifting a curtain in the background.
