UNKNOWN PERSON

'Henry, Prince of Wales'

c. 1859

Albumen print? | RCIN 2866329

Photograph of a three-quarter length portrait of Prince Henry Frederick (1594-1612), eldest son of King James VI, as an infant in 1596. Seated in a throne, the prince faces slightly to the left and gazes at the viewer. He wears a bejewelled headpiece and robe, while holding a rattle(?) in his left hand and a small bunch of cherries in his right hand. A Latin inscription can be seen on the top-left corner.

At the time of the photograph, the painting was in the collection of Admiral Bethune of Balfour, Fifeshire (1802-84). Subsequently, it was highly likely acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland.
