'Éberhard le Larmoyeur'

Photograph of a drawing by Ary Scheffer, drafted as preparatory for his c.1834 painting 'Eberhard, comte de Württemberg' now in the Louvre, Paris (INV. 7856). Inspired by Friedrich Schiller's (1759-1805) ballad 'Count Eberhard, the Weeper of Württemberg', the work depicts the bearded Count seated in an armchair. His hands are clasped as he faces his son's body laid in front of him. A group of men can be seen in the background.
 
Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
