'Éberhard le coupeur de nappe'

Photograph of a work by Ary Scheffer, the prime version of which was painted around 1851 and is now in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Inv. no. 1776). Inspired by Friedrich Schiller's 1782 ballad 'Count Eberhard, the Weeper of Württemberg', the work depicts the bearded count seated at a dining table. With his right hand he holds a dagger against the furniture's surface, whilst looking at his son who stands in front of the table, to the right. The son faces a quarter to the right and gazes straight to the viewer.

Ary Scheffer (and his studio) continued throughout his life to produce new works of old compositions on demand. His paintings were also widely reproduced as etchings.
