AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

A study for The Massacre of the Innocents

c. 1857

Albumen print? | RCIN 2864390

A photograph of a red chalk drawing by Raphael (c. 1510-1511) depicting 'The Massacre of the Innocents' now in the Royal Library, Windsor (RCIN 912737).

This drawing is a study for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (see RCIN 850413 for the print). This drawing features a design for a salver on the verso: see RCIN 854250 for a photograph of the verso.

'The Massacre of the Innocents' was produced during the early years of the collaboration between Marcantonio and Raphael; six drawings by Raphael related to this composition survive, though no painting is known. See also RCINs 850419, 850422, 850424 and 850425 for photographs of the other drawings.

A copy of this photograph (RCIN 850421) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 5 (970564)
