GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Alt-na-Guisach Balmoral Castle

c. 1862

Albumen print | 11.0 x 17.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2160358

Photograph of two cottages on the Balmoral estate. The cottages occupy a clearing within a pine forest with rhododendron bushes lining both sides of the driveway. A man stands by the entrance to the cottage on the left and the cottage on the right has a turf roof with a wooden lattice porch.

This photograph is typical of the picturesque album prints that Wilson was producing during the first half of the 1860's. Wilson re-visited many of the views that had proved popular to the public in earlier years. The enduring popularity of these views strengthened his status as one of Scotland's most successful commercial photographers. Originally comprising a single cottage with a sod covered roof constructed for deer watcher, and described by Queen Victoria as 'The Hut', Alltnaguibhsaich grew to include a second building standing on the left that was constructed in 1849.
