GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle (from the NW) 1862

c. 1862

Albumen print | 11.9 x 16.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2160356

Photograph of Balmoral Castle from the north west with the Porte cochère on the far right and the square clock tower standing to the left of centre in the background. On the left is the exterior of the ballroom and to the right, steps leading to the terrace. In the foreground are hay ricks, one of which has a man raking the top to the right of the centre. A wheelbarrow stands to the left.

This photograph is a good example in which Wilson has managed to capture the detail in the sky which would otherwise have been lost when exposing for the foreground detail. Early photographers often struggled to create a balance between the highlights of the sky and the darker areas of the landscape and Wilson was one of the first landscape photographers to address this.
