Holy Families & Madonna and Child

ATTRIBUTED TO THE SCHOOL OF BERNARD VAN ORLEY (C. 1488-1541/2)

The Virgin and Child with St Elizabeth and an angel

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 28.2 x 17.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851275

A photograph of a painting currently in the collection at Wilton House, Wiltshire, where it is attributed to the school of Bernard van Orley (Sidney Charles Pembroke 1986, cat. no.153). The composition is derived from the so-called 'Virgin and the Cradle' which is generally associated with designs by Raphael and known through an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. For a first state impression of the engraving by Raimondi, see RCIN 851273. The photograph shows the full-length seated Virgin, holding the Christ Child with both hands, who looks down at the winged angel who reaches for Him bending over His cradle, with a female saint (St Anne?) standing behind the Virgin with raised arms; with architectural background, and landscape beyond. The painting has an arched top.
