ATTRIBUTED TO? HILLS & SAUNDERS (1852 TO DATE)

The Red (King's) Room, Windsor Castle

c.1873

RCIN 2084124

Glass plate negative of the Red (King's) Room in the Private Apartments, Windsor Castle (F207). To the right are a table covered in a heavy cloth, chairs, paisley-covered settees, and vases on cabinets at the back. The open door leads to further rooms. To the left is a French boulle table (which may now be at Parliament House, Canberra), a chair, a vase on a pedestal. The wall-hangings and curtains are as created for King George IV about 1829, a striped pattern of alternating medallions and leafy bands in gold on an orange or geranium-red ground.

The room was sometimes known as the King's rooms, when King Leopold of the Belgians would use these rooms at Windsor. The room was part of the new suite designed for George IV and known as the King's Writing Room. In 1909 it was renamed as the King's Bedroom, for Edward VII, and eventually re-designated as the Duke of Edinburgh's Dining Room, about 1955.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2100571.
