The Queen's Dining and Lunch Room, Buckingham Palace

c.1873

RCIN 2084386

Glass plate negative featuring two almost identical views of the Queen's Dining and Lunch Room, now known as the Chinese Dining Room, Buckingham Palace. The walls are hung with Chinoiserie panels by Robert Jones, from a set of four originally commissioned by George IV for the Brighton Pavilion (RCIN 755). There is a large flower-shaped chandelier, one of a pair (RCIN 2338), various over-sized vases and jars around the room, including a pair of candelabras (RCIN 203) on the fireplace. Also on the massive fireplace is the 'Kylin clock' under a glass case (RCIN 2867). Over the far entrances there are shaped gilt overdoors, with decorations of winged serpents (RCIN 756).

The Chinese Dining Room is one of a number of early Victorian Chinese room in the east wing of Buckingham Palace, re-using some of the salvaged fittings and furnishings from George IV's Brighton Pavilion. The Pavillion was sold by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to Brighton town council in 1846.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2103817.
