Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

HILLS & SAUNDERS (1852 TO DATE)

The Albert Room, Windsor Castle

c.1873

RCIN 2084151

Glass plate negative of the Albert Room, also known as Blue Room, in the Private Apartments, Windsor Castle (F202). It includes two single beds with loose covers over the head and foot boards, and decorated with wreaths; a bust of Albert, the Prince Consort by Theed on a plinth is placed in between the beds (see RCIN 2068).

Prince Albert was nursed in the Blue Room during the final days of his life. He died in the room on the night of 14 December 1861. Following his death, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) maintained the room as a living shrine to Prince Albert's memory. Fresh flowers were consistently displayed in the room, new clothes laid out everyday and hot water added to the washstand.

This was the same room that Prince Albert, King George III and King William IV died. It was also King George IV's Bedroom.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant of the room from the same session is represented by RCIN 2100569.
