THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

Soldiers from the Royal Marines who served in the Crimean War

Jun 1855

Wet collodion negative | 12.0 x 16.1 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2082968

4 ¾" x 6.5" glass plate negative showing five soldiers from the Royal Marines who served in the Crimean War. They are gathered on a street corner around a metal post, three standing and two sitting on the road. All are wearing military uniform and the Crimean Medal. A man wearing civilian clothes is standing to the far left, writing in a notebook.

These soldiers were awarded the Crimean Medal by Queen Victoria on 18th May 1855 and were later photographed by T R Williams in Portsmouth.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500151).
