THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

Royal Navy Officers who served in the Crimean War

Jun 1855

Wet collodion negative | 16.1 x 12.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2082967

6.5" x 4 ¾" glass plate negative showing three men from the Royal Navy who served in the Crimean War. From right to left: Charles Brooks, John Starling and Edward Pengelly. They are gathered around a ship's anchor and a flagpole and all are wearing naval uniform including the Crimean Medal. There is a building and a pile of large metal chains behind.

These naval officers were awarded the Crimean Medal by Queen Victoria on 18th May 1855 and were later photographed by T R Williams in Portsmouth.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500153).
