Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
'Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Victoria, the Princess Royal'
after an original of 25 Jan 1858RCIN 2084339
Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype by Thomas Richard Williams, taken on 25 January 1858. The image depicts a three-quarter length group portrait of Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Prince Albert (1819-1861) and their first daughter, Victoria, the Princess Royal, later Empress of Germany (1840-1901). The queen wears a light coloured dress with the George IV State Diadem, the prince a military uniform adorned with various Orders, and the princess her wedding dress, veil and floral crown. The daguerreotype was taken at Buckingham Palace just before the princess wedding to Prince Frederick of Prussia.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from this negative survives, RCIN 2900123.
