AFTER THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)
'Princess Louise, Princess Alice, and Princess Helena'
after an original of 25 Jan 1858RCIN 2084340
Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype by Thomas Richard Williams taken on 25 January 1858. The image depicts a full-length portrait of three of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's daughters. From righ to left stand Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939), Princess Alice, later the Grand Duchess of Hesse and Rhine (1843-78), and Princess Helena (1846-1923). Princess Alice places her left arm around Princess Helena's shoulders. The princesses are dressed for the occasion of their older sister's (Victoria, the Princess Royal) wedding to Prince Frederick William of Prussia. They carry fans and wear flowers in their hair.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from this negative survives, RCIN 2900124.
