Bauer is seated, holding a book open in both hands. She looks up at the princess, who appears standing, returning Bauer's gaze. The two women are wearing similar dresses.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900317.
