Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Princess Helena (1846-1923) and Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939)

7 - 7 Apr 1859

RCIN 2083650

Glass plate negative of a full length double portrait of Princess Helena and Princess Louise standing, facing slightly towards each other and looking at the camera. The princesses wear costumes intended to represent Swiss peasants. This includes a hat decorated with flowers, knee-length dresses with full skirts and fingerless gloves. There is a pillar covered in foliage on the far right side of the photograph.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exists in the Collection, (e.g. RCINs 2900163 and 2915699). For a hand-coloured version see RCIN 2914284.
