Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

Princess Beatrice (1857-1944), later Princess Henry of Battenburg

1860-65

RCIN 2082602

Glass plate negative of a nearly full length portrait of Princess Beatrice. The princess is shown standing, facing three-quarters to the right and turning her gaze towards the camera. She holds her hands together in front of her waist. She wears a short-sleeved dress and a hairband, her long hair hanging loose.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
