Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

Feb 1861

RCIN 2082508

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Alice standing, facing towards the camera. She turns her head slightly and looks towards the left. She holds her hands together in front of her waist. A brocade shawl can be seen draped over her left arm.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2900435 and 2900443).
