ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Princess Alice as 'Spring' in the Tableau of the Seasons

May 1854

RCIN 2083651

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Alice, later the Grand Duchess of Hesse and Rhine (1843-78). The princes faces the viewer on a slight angle and looks to the left, away from the camera. She is dressed as spring for a Tableaux of the Seasons, performed at Windsor. She wears a costume consisting of a flower headband, light colour shirt, dark colour waist jacket, light colour sash, dark colour apron, light colour skirt and light colour shoes with dark ribbons and decoration. She holds a posy in her right hand and a basket of flowers in her left. She poses against a light colour sheet backdrop.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2800667 and 2512157)
