Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)
c. 1859RCIN 2082699
Glass plate negative featuring two full length portraits of Prince Alice standing, facing three-quarters to the right. She turns her head slightly towards the camera and gazes down. Photograph taken on the Lower Terrace, Osborne House.
The negative image on the left has been scratched out, an act perhaps indicative of a displeasing pose.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from the intact portrait exists in the Collection, RCIN 2906436.
