Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84)

Mar 1861

RCIN 2082524

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Leopold standing, facing three-quarters to the right. He gazes ahead, away from the camera. He leans his right arm on a plinth in front of him, and holds a cap with both hands, placing the cap against the plinth. He crosses his legs. Prince Leopold wears Highland dress.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2907943 and 2900490).
