Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

FRANCES SALLY DAY (1815-92)

Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)

Jul 1859

RCIN 2082366

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900) standing, facing towards the camera. He turn his head and looks towards the left. He leans his right arm on a plinth, holding a cap in his right hand, and places his left hand on his waist. He wears a naval uniform. The photograph was taken at Osborne House.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900204.
