Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)
1856Wet collodion negative | 30.5 x 38.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2079328
Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900), seated, leaning on rock. He props his head up against his arm and wears Highland dress including a kilt. The photograph was taken in Balmoral just before the prince left his family in order to begin his naval career.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints by Fenton from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2941853.
