Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Prince Albert, Prince Consort (1819-61)

May 1860

RCIN 2082667

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Albert, Prince Consort standing, facing to the left. A small table containing an ink set is placed in front of him. The prince has one hand on top of the table and the other hand in front of his stomach. His less are crossed.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2914939.
