Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Prince Albert, Prince Consort (1819-1861)

Mar 1861

RCIN 2082556

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Albert standing, facing slightly to the right and looking ahead, away from the camera. He leans against a plinth, located on the farleft side of the frame. Prince Albert wears a morning suit and striped waistcoat.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Several prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2914949). The item is almost identical, and perhaps a copy, of RCIN 2082466.
