Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
ROGER FENTON (1819-69)
Prince Albert Edward of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1910)
25 - 25 Jan 1854RCIN 2084832
Glass plate negative of Prince Albert Edward standing and looking down at a rifle that he is loading. A variety of dead game are laid out by his feet, including a pheasant and a rabbit. The Prince wears a peaked hat and stands against a sheet as a backdrop. The gun that the prince holds was his first gun and was later used by King George V, the Duke of Clarence, Edward VIII, and King George VI when they were boys.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Several prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2905984, 2900020 and 2106397).
