Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER BRYAN EDWARD DUPPA (1804-66)

Prince Albert (1819-1861)

1889 copy after an original of May 1854

RCIN 2083610

Glass plate negative of photograph depicting a three-quarter length portrait of Prince Albert seated. He is captured in profile, facing to the right.

The original portrait of Prince Albert was taken in May 1854 by Duppa (RCIN 2917838). In July of the same year, Queen Victoria commissioned him to take a photograph of her, as a surprise for her husband. In her portrait (RCIN 2906533), the Queen is seen holding a framed copy of this photograph.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2906522.
