Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Photography of paintings

c. 1860

RCIN 2084838

Glass plate negative depicting two paintings placed on an easel for the purpose of photography. The paintings, both by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, are a portrait of Jane, Marchioness of Ely (RCIN 400758), and a portrait of Queen Victoria and her third son, Prince Arthur (RCIN 405963).

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
