Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER BARON CARLO MAROCHETTI (1805-67)

Maquette of the Prince Consort statue, Aberdeen

c. 1862

RCIN 2508037

Glass plate negative showing a detail of a maquette relating to the Prince Consort's statue in Aberdeen. The prince is presented seated, wearing the uniform of a Field Marshal and the robe of the insignia of The Order of the Thistle, the highest Honour of Scotland. The photograph was possibly taken at the artist's studio.

The statue was made by Baron Carlo Marochetti and the unveiling took place on Union Street in 1863 by Queen Victoria, and it remained here until 1914. It is now in the garden area opposite His Majesty's Theatre, Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
