Glass plate negative of John Elder, the keeper of the Royal Kennels, with Rufus, described as Queen Victoria's 'black hound'.

John Elder was employed at the Royal Kennels from 1852 to c. 1863. He died in 1891. Rufus was born in 25 December 1851.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative (RCIN 2105060) can be found in an album belonging to Queen Victoria.
