ATTRIBUTED TO CUNDALL & HOWLETT

John Daniels and Robert Evans

1855-6

Wet collodion negative | 15.2 x 12.7 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2083115

6" x 5" glass plate negative showing John Daniels of the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot and Robert Evans of the 13th Light Dragoons, both veterans of the Crimean War. John Daniels is sitting to the right and Robert Evans to the left. Both are wearing civilian clothes and are holding a wooden crutch in their right hand. There is a brick wall behind them.

Both men lost their left leg in the Crimean War, Daniels at the Battle of Alma and Evans during the Light Cavalry Charge at the Battle of Balaklava. They were among the wounded soldiers that Queen Victoria met at the military hospital at Chatham shortly after the war. Following her visits to the hospital she commissioned a series of photographs of the veterans.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500155).
