Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Princess Louise, later Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939) dressed as Winter

10 - 10 Feb 1854

RCIN 2083641

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of the Prince of Wales and Princess Louise seated around a make-believe fire. The siblings are dressed in the character of Winter for the Tableaux of the Seasons, performed at Windsor Castle in 1854. The Prince of Wales is seated with one leg extended in front of him. He wears a hat, cloak and beard with the appearance of snow on his clothes. Beside him sits Princess Louise, with her hands outstretched as if to warm them by the fire. The fire consists of a cauldron, strung up on a tripod. In the foreground lie kindling, a log and an axe.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g.  RCINs 2900035 and 2906067).
