Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII (1841-1910)

9 - 9 Nov 1858

RCIN 2082473

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales standing, facing towards the camera. His head turns a quarter to the left, while he rests both hands on the hilt of his sword placed directly in fornt of him. He wears a military uniform with belt, sash over the shoulder, and Garter Star. A plinth has been placed beside him, on top of which his plumed bicorne can be seen.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2915726.
