Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII (1841-1910)

9 - 9 Nov 1858

RCIN 2082472

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales standing, facing to the viewer. His head is turned a quarter to the left. He wears a military uniform with belt, sash over the shoulder, and Garter Star. He holds a plumed bicorne in his right hand and a sword in his left. A plinth has been placed beside him.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2915726.
