Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER ANTOINE FRANÇOIS JEAN CLAUDET (1797-1867)

'Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alice at Gloucester House'

after an original of 30 Jun 1856

RCIN 2084343

Glass plate negative of a dagurreotype by Antoine François Jean Claudet taken on 30 June 1856. The image depicts a full-length double portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78). The two siblings stand arm in arm facing towards the camera. Photograph taken at Gloucester House, the Duchess of Gloucester's (1776-1857) London residency.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from this negative survives, RCIN 2106418. For a variant daguerreotype from the same session see RCIN 2932493.
