Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER ANTOINE FRANÇOIS JEAN CLAUDET (1797-1867)

'Group portrait at Gloucester House'

after an original of 30 Jun 1856

RCIN 2084342

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype by Antoine François Jean Claudet taken on 30 June 1856. The image depicts a full-length group portrait of Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910), Princess Alice (1843-1878) and the Duchess of Gloucester (1776-1857). The daguerreotype was taken at Gloucester House, the duchess' London residency.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from this negative survives, RCIN 2106416. For a variant daguerreotype from the same session see RCIN 2932493.
