Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)
Queen Victoria (1819-1901)
May 1860RCIN 2082453
Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Queen Victoria seated with a fan on her lap. She faces to the viewer, while turning her head to look at the left.
A posing stand can be seen on the far right. This studio apparatus, which helped sitters hold still during long exposure times, would have been cropped out by the photographer when creating a print.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting, including Prince Albert, is represented by RCIN 2105662.
