Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

Mar 1861

RCIN 2082452

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Queen Victoria standing, facing halfway to the right. She turns her head towards the camera and looks to the left. She is posed beside a pillar and curtain, shown on the left of the frame. The queen has a shawl draped over her left arm.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. 2105699).
