Oscar Gustav Rejlander (1814-75), 'Non Angeli sed Angli', 1857, albumen print, RCIN 2906215©

In 1857, Prince Albert and Queen Victoria purchased Oscar Gustav Rejlander's (1814–75) photograph Non Angeli sed Angli, shown on the right. The photograph depicts two young children posed to resemble putti from Raphael's (1483–1520) painting Sistine Madonna (1512).

In the same year, a salted paper print of the young Prince Arthur, later the Duke of Connaught (1850–1942), was created by the photographer Leonida Caldesi (1823–91). The work was a commission by the royal couple, and was likely inspired by Rejlander’s photograph. Like the children in Rejlander’s photograph, the young Prince has adopted a pose reminiscent of the putti.
