Edgar Bowring's Papers

Papers of Edgar Alfred Bowring, Secretary to the Commission for the Exhibition

This collection, taken from The Archive of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, comprises correspondence sent to Secretary to the Commission, Edgar Alfred Bowring (1826-1911).

Edgar Bowring, a translator and civil servant, was one of the founding members of the Commission and took on the role of Secretary, which he held from 1850 to 1869. This collection consists of correspondence sent to Bowring, along with a few outgoing letters, and covers the period 1850-1865. As Secretary he worked closely alongside Prince Albert (1819-61), as President of the Commission and his correspondence records the thinking behind many of the decisions made by Prince Albert and other Commissioners.
