WILLIAM RUSSELL (1800-84)
Letter from William Russell to Charles Ruland acknowledging receipt of photographs of [his] Raphael and other drawings.
20 Jul 1860Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/132
Russell reports that he has received the photographs [of his drawings] sent by Ruland and comments on how well some of them have come out, particularly the Presentation at the Temple; he also mentions the Pinturicchio, the 'Claude-Raphael', the St Cecilia and the little Target-Shooters, although the 'sheet of scraps' and the Psyche have shortcomings. He adds that he remembers well the cartoon of David & Goliath that Mr Colnaghi had - it was very coarse and dark, would not photograph well and was and much inferior to his own drawing.
Russell declares that he is willing to have any of his drawings re-photographed in the autumn if desired, being happy to contribute to the collection. If 'a similar monument to the genius of Michael Angelo' were ever to be begun, he would hope to contribute. He has heard that the new Library at Windsor is a great success and hopes to see it. He adds a postscript reminding Ruland that the Prince Consort has given permission for him to be told how he can obtain some of the preparation applied to photographs [at Windsor], which is available for drawings too.
